Cheese and butter is pure art…created from the goodness of nature with skill and imagination. At Finlandia this art has been raised to the highest level. Our master craftsmen use only the purest, natural ingredients to craft our delicious tasting cheeses.
Our recipes actually demand that every ounce of milk and every ingredient we use in the making of our cheeses be of the highest possible quality and purity. Strict adherence to the standards of our master cheesemakers who came before us is why Finlandia continues to be considered one of the world’s finest and most flavorful cheeses today.
Finlandia is owned by small Finnish family-owned farms with over 110 years of passion and dedication to making the very best butter and cheese. We know that the happier the cow, the better the milk. That’s why we treat our cows like family.
There are only 28 cows per farm and each one is called by name. They are treated to the greenest grass and breathe the pure air of Finland, one of the cleanest countries on Earth. The result is the purest milk in the world with nothing artificial and no added hormones.
The story of Finlandia begins in the 1950s when Valio Ltd. started exporting Emmental Swiss cheese to the U.S to meet the growing demand for full-flavored, quality cheese. Atalanta became the exclusive U.S. importer for Valio in 1959. In the late 1970s, they developed the Finlandia brand and began consumer media advertising in the NY Metro area.
During this time, Finlandia cheese became a favorite in the finest New York delis and soon expanded into supermarkets, delis, cheese shops and restaurants throughout the Northeast.
In 1992, Finlandia was acquired by Valio, Ltd. whose reputation in dairy dates back to 1905 when seventeen of Finland’s finest dairies joined together to create the country’s first dairy co-operative. This industry leading co-operative now produces more than 85% of the milk in Finland.
Under the Valio umbrella, Finlandia continues to build on the same commitment to quality and innovation that earned Valio’s Director of Research, Artturi Ilmari Virtanen, the Nobel Prize in 1945 for groundbreaking work related to Emmental Swiss cheese production.
